December 2025
Independent developer Marcin Krzyzanowski today announced the release of Notepad.exe 1.5, adding JavaScript support powered by Bun to the native macOS code editor. This update transforms Notepad.exe into a three-language development environment supporting Swift, Python, and JavaScript with the same zero-configuration philosophy.
"JavaScript developers deal with enough configuration files," says Krzyzanowski. "With version 1.5, you open Notepad.exe, write JavaScript, and run it. Bun handles everything else - no package.json, no node_modules folder, no build step. Just code."
The integration uses Bun as the JavaScript runtime, chosen for its speed and modern approach to JavaScript development. Notepad.exe automatically manages Bun installation and updates, maintaining its promise of zero manual setup.
Bun was selected as the JavaScript runtime for several reasons:
"Bun aligns perfectly with Notepad.exe's philosophy. It's fast, it's simple, and it just works. You write modern JavaScript and it runs - no transpilation step, no waiting."
Version 1.5 maintains the core Notepad.exe experience that users expect. JavaScript notes work exactly like Swift and Python notes - create a new note, select JavaScript, and start coding. The notes library now supports three languages, all with the same instant-execution workflow.
Platform awareness introduced in version 1.4 extends to JavaScript, with clear visual indicators showing which runtime each note uses. Developers working across multiple languages can organize and filter their notes library by language.
Notepad.exe 1.5 is available immediately as a free update for all existing users. New users can purchase at notepadexe.com with pricing starting at $19.99/year subscription or $79 for a lifetime license. Academic discounts are available for students and educators.
System requirements: macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) or later.
Launched in May 2025, Notepad.exe is a native macOS code editor that eliminates setup friction. By treating code like notes, it enables developers to prototype, learn, and experiment without the overhead of traditional IDEs. With support for Swift, Python, JavaScript, iOS Simulator integration, Linux cross-compilation, AI-powered assistance, and Mac app export, Notepad.exe serves as a complete developer's playground.
